IRIB Started HEVC (H.265)-Encoding Migration for Some HD Services

To lay the groundwork for launching the next generation of broadcast services in Iran, IRIB published a document named: "minimum requirement of the terrestrial digital television receiver in the Islamic Republic of Iran" in March of 2018. In this document, among other new requirements, the addition of HEVC coding (in DVB-T2) format and support for HbbTV services were foreseen.

The trial broadcast of DVB-T2/HEVC (main 10) started on October 2017 with "Tamasha HD" program on Ch. 31 UHF in Tehran.

First pilot broadcast of HbbTV services using HEVC encoding in "TV3 HD" program started on 31 May 2018.

Official Broadcast of Mux_3 with DVB-T2/ HEVC in Kerman, Zanjan and Eastern Azerbaijan provinces was started in 2018. More recently, the Mux_3 broadcast in HEVC was launched in Noshahr city and surrounding areas.

The following video compression formats are currently used for terrestrial broadcast in Iran.
